Hello folks! We're Justin and Kylie Russell, a husband and wife team with lots of experience growing food for ourselves and our community. We planted our first vegie patch on rented land in April 1999, and have grown fruit, vegies, herbs and spices continuously, at various scales and in different capacities, ever since.
Kylie is a teacher by training, and currently works a couple of days off the farm at our local primary school. Justin works full time on the farm, putting a career as a freelance gardening journalist on the backburner (read more about Justin's media work here). We have three kids - Marley, Monty and Fergus.
About the Farm
Half Moon Farm is three and a half acres of fertile ground in the little mountaintop village of Hampton, half an hour's drive north of Toowoomba and ten minutes south of Crows Nest. Our elevation is 740m - one of the highest points in the district. We are blessed with a warm temperate climate, good quality volcanic soil and an average rainfall of about 1000mm per year. The conditions at Half Moon Farm are ripe for growing a wide range of food producing plants and for raising naturally healthy small livestock.
We currently manage a 650sqm market garden, a small avocado orchard, a wide range of other fruiting plants, along with small flocks of chooks and geese. We plan to expand the farm gradually over the coming years, transforming what was originally a fairly blank canvas into a diverse ecosystem that oozes abundance and productivity.
A limiting factor will be climate change. It's one reason why we're working toward making our farm as resilient as possible. We're doing this by using regenerative farming systems such as permaculture, biointensive growing, holistic management and organics to build healthy soil, close the loop on waste and fertility, and create a strong sense of community among our neighbours and customers.
